Uncategorized http://paleocoder.com Thu, 14 Jul 2016 00:04:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.5.29 I’m still alive! http://paleocoder.com/2013/08/30/im-still-alive/ http://paleocoder.com/2013/08/30/im-still-alive/#respond Fri, 30 Aug 2013 01:11:25 +0000 http://paleocoder.com/2013/08/30/im-still-alive/ Read more]]> In spite of what this article might lead you to believe on siliconindia.com, the paleo diet has not killed me off. Not by a long shot. I haven’t been posting any updates in the last several months due to a variety of reasons. I plateaud after losing 110 lbs and intentionally relaxed what I was doing somewhat. I convinced myself it was okay and temporary. It’s easy to do. I live in a SAD family with 2 teenage kids that are deeply devoted to being SAD. In more ways than one it often seems… But change being ever present, we have been through a lot in the last few months. New jobs, new house, new schools; My wife and I barely survived it!

I’m happy to say that I have not put a lot of weight back on. Probably 5-10 lbs from my lowest point of 115 lost. But I am not happy with where I am. I’m not able to work out due to both of my hips having osteoarthritis from many years of being over weight but still trying to do everything everybody else was doing in my tae kwon do work outs. My hips have progressively degenerated and I’m looking at hip replacement surgery for both as soon as possible. If anyone has any relevant hip replacement info regarding surgeons, techniques, or facilities in the Dallas area, I would love to hear about it.

Until the surgery and recover are behind me, I’m going to refocus my energies on paleo and nutrition. I can hear my hips telling me that losing another 80 pounds wouldn’t bother them a bit!

Fat Head – the Movie http://paleocoder.com/2012/01/30/fat-head-the-movie/ http://paleocoder.com/2012/01/30/fat-head-the-movie/#respond Mon, 30 Jan 2012 05:27:37 +0000 http://paleocoder.com/2012/01/30/fat-head-the-movie/ I came across a documentary today that I thought was worthy of recognition. Fat Head (2009) is a documentary by Tom Naughton where he follows up on the infamous Super Size Me. While he really punches holes in Super Size Me’s conclusion, it’s the common sense approach that’s worth paying some attention to. Tom set about eating fast food everyday only he set some rules to try to see if he could do so and still lose weight. He certainly isn’t promoting paleo, but he did take a fairly low carb approach. It’s a long movie but pretty entertaining.

Tom also posts Bad Science articles on LowCarbBlogs.net

South Beachers Going Paleo? http://paleocoder.com/2011/11/09/south-beachers-going-paleo/ http://paleocoder.com/2011/11/09/south-beachers-going-paleo/#respond Wed, 09 Nov 2011 04:13:54 +0000 http://paleocoder.com/2011/11/09/south-beachers-going-paleo/ Dr. Arthur Agatston, the creater of the South Beach diet, was on CBS News the other day on a real gluten free promotion. No mention of Paleo in the piece but he’s sounding like he’d be very comfortable with a paleo diet.

That’s a big high profile proponent for raising gluten sensitivity awareness!

Experts Call Low Carb Paleo Unhealthy http://paleocoder.com/2011/11/02/experts-call-low-carb-paleo-unhealthy/ http://paleocoder.com/2011/11/02/experts-call-low-carb-paleo-unhealthy/#respond Wed, 02 Nov 2011 02:06:11 +0000 http://paleocoder.com/2011/11/02/experts-call-low-carb-paleo-unhealthy/ Read more]]> U.S. News & World Report posted a story today titled “What makes a Healthy Diet?” and once again tows the government line on requirements for grains and dairy. It’s certainly a well meaning article pointing out the desperate attempts to lose weight can often come at the expense of the dieter’s health. But in blindly following the governmental guidelines, the author is contributing to the confusion and cover up of the key health issues we face today.

They list the diets in order of nutritional completeness with Paleo near the bottom. Then, when you look at the details, they point out that the paleo diet significantly exceeds the recommended level of;

 • Fiber
 • Vitamin B-12
 • Potassium

And it’s beneficially lower in SALT!

So what’s the knock? They assume you will likely fall short of the amount of calcium recommended by 30-50%. Sounds like an advertisement for fortified cereal will be popping up any moment… Then they point out low vitamin D. Yes most Americans are deficient in vitamin D but if you’ll just go outside once in awhile… Okay seriously, ever hear of fish? eggs? liver? mushrooms? And don’t forget cheese.

So really what it comes down to is the ratio of macro nutrients that don’t fit governmental guidelines.

Fat at 39% is 4% above allowed.
Protein at 38% is 3% above allowed.

And the WHOPPER!

Carbohydrates at 23% is far far below the required 45-65% recommended amount! This is what they can’t get past. How can you be healthy without shoving bread and pasta down your pie hole?

This ranking was produced by 22 MD’s & PhD’s that need to be woken up! Let’s send them encouragement and links to studies/papers which illustrate today’s science. Check the list of doctors and make your voice heard!

Mobile Nutri-Posting Fun! http://paleocoder.com/2011/09/29/mobile-nutri-posting-fun/ http://paleocoder.com/2011/09/29/mobile-nutri-posting-fun/#respond Thu, 29 Sep 2011 19:43:00 +0000 http://paleocoder.com/2011/09/29/mobile-nutri-posting-fun/ I’m a huge mobile, Windows Phone addict and I’ve been using this great app called “LiveScape” to track my nutrition and activity. It dawned on me today that I can post updates from this activity that would show up in my twitter feed down on the right. Probably not a bit of help for anybody but I geek out about this stuff so bear with me. If you’re a Windows Phone user, this application is incredible and I highly recommend checking it out.

Introduction: How did I get here? http://paleocoder.com/2011/09/10/introduction-how-did-i-get-here/ http://paleocoder.com/2011/09/10/introduction-how-did-i-get-here/#respond Sat, 10 Sep 2011 18:34:01 +0000 http://paleocoder.com/2011/09/10/introduction-how-did-i-get-here/ In August of 2010, I weighed 390 pounds. One year later, I have lost 100 pounds by simply being smart and eating right. I didn’t excercise or starve myself either. I am halfway on my journey and it dawned on me that I should really share this with others. So, this site is where I will record my progress, dispell a bunch of misconceptions, and hopefully encourage some of you curious enough to venture here to get your life back too!

I started this journey a year ago much like so many others. Both as in other people and in other personal attempts to lose weight. I had previously seen a lot of success on what was Larry North‘s Great American Diet. I credit him with getting me started in actually thinking about nutrition and the fuel that makes our bodies work. If you aren’t familiar with this diet, it is basically a zone diet. I also had some friends doing the Atkins diet with a lot of success. So I started out like before trying to eat 5-6 smaller portioned, well balanced meals each day. I saw the most success when I reduced my carbs so I was really customizing my plan based on what my body was telling me. A couple months into this, I was listening to some of my favorite programming podcasts and the term paleo kept getting mentioned, particularly by Dan Benjamin and his 5by5 network.

I started listening to Latest in Paleo and the Paleo Solution podcasts and this guy Robb Wolf was sounding pretty damn knowledgable as a biochemist. I had already eliminated sugar but was still trying to watch my fat intake while eating lots of good lean meats. I had figured out that bread and pasta were killers in my diet but I didn’t have a clue as to the real health impact these foods were having on my life.

For the past 15 years, I had been bothered by a handful of issues including inflammation (a bought of cellulitis that doubled the size of my left leg), sleep apnea (spent a couple nights being monitored for a cpap and had over 300 “events”), psoriasis on my arms and face, and a perpetually stopped up nose that only cleared when I went outside into the fresh, pollen filled air!

After only a few months following a roughly paleo diet (about 80%), I have seen huge improvements in all of these issues! I can’t begin to tell you what a difference this has made in my life. I’m in better shape, have better sleep, and breath easier throughout the day. I will be explaining more about the paleo diet, why it’s so freaking amazing, and how to make it easy, in the posts to come. I will also be talking about what the corporate giants are doing keep the wool over our eyes and how the government is inept at solving these problems.
